Semtech Unveils Industry's First Chip-Scale, Integrated Protection Array for Color LCD Interface in Handhelds and Portables

New device optimized to protect 10 lines, providing ESD protection plus EMI/RFI filtering in ultra-space-saving, flip-chip packaging

Camarillo, California - May 14, 2003

Semtech Corp. (NASDAQ: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced availability of the SFC2309-200. The device is a single-chip, integrated array optimized for voltage surge protection and signal filtering on the interface between displays and their host circuitry in cell phones, personal digital assistants, mobile computers, digital cameras, camcorders, and portable DVD players.

The newest member of Semtech's ChipClamp™ family of products, the SFC2309-200 is designed to protect up to ten separate signal lines from damaging electrostatic discharge (ESD) or cable discharge events (CDE), as well as filter out disruptive electromagnetic and radio frequency interference (EMI/RFI). These voltage anomalies and signal disturbers often enter a system through external interfaces like displays, keyboards, or plug ports. With its unprecedented ten-line ESD/EMI/RFI protection capability, the SFC2309-200 represents the industry's first single-device solution for color LCDs and other digital display panels, replacing up to 40 discrete components. The SFC2309-200 protects up to ten signal lines with working voltages up to 5V. Two transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes, which shunt unwanted transients safely to ground, are provided for each protected line. The first diode handles most or all of the energy from a transient event, while the second effectively clamps any of the remaining surge components. This dual-stage protection minimizes stress on sensitive, low-voltage ICs, such as LCD controllers, microcontrollers, or microprocessors. The device offers protection from ESD in excess of 8kV (contact) and 15kV (air), per IEC 61000-4-2, Level 4, thereby meeting industry requirements for protection of consumer electronics.

The SFC2309-200 device also provides a low-pass filter for each protected line to minimize the distortion of signals being driven from protected ICs. The filter provides minimal insertion loss in the pass band (0 to 10MHz) and a minimum of 25dB of attenuation at frequencies from 800MHz to 3GHz. This makes the SFC2309-200 ideal for use in conventional and internet-enabled cellular phones operating in CDMA, GSM or tri-band frequencies. The SFC2309-200 dual-function device not only reduces component count, but its ultra-compact (2.6 x 2.6 x 0.65 mm), JEDEC standard, 0.50 mm pitch, flip-chip package also saves board space and design costs. This advanced package technology also contributes to the device's low clamping voltage and minimal parasitic inductance, which virtually eliminates voltage overshoot caused by the package leads and bond-wires in conventional packages.

"The SFC2309-200 represents an indisputable achievement in the evolution of integrated passives, in terms of functionality, performance, and especially integration," said Semtech's Director of Protection Products, Tom Dugan. "The device marries the industry's leading protection technology with previously-discrete EMI/RFI filter functions—a process that started with the introduction of our SFC2280-50 last year. This level of integration, in such an easily implemented solution, offers tremendous value to system designers."

Key Features of the SFC2309-200

  • ESD protection and EMI/RFI filtering for 10 signal lines
