Semtech's Highly Integrated, High-Performance PWM Controller Challenges Competitive DevicesThe SC4905 controller offers programmable operation to 1 MHz, an integrated oscillator, voltage feed-forward compensation, and in all, more features than other controllers. Camarillo, California - November 06, 2002 Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced the SC4905, a high-performance, highly integrated, BiCMOS, primary-side, voltage-mode PWM controller. Designed to outperform competitive devices for building isolated DC/DC and off-line power supplies using a secondary-side external error amplifier, the feature-rich SC4905 also cuts a supply's cost and space requirements. Moreover, its feed-forward architecture yields improved dynamic performance. In a typical telecom application, the SC4905 controller would supply the control and drive circuits needed to convert a bus supply rail, typically ranging from 18V to 75V, to 12V or some other low voltage. In addition to telecom, broadband, and network equipment, the SC4905 will find suitable applications in power-over-LAN products, as well as industrial, isolated, and point-of-use power supplies. "By virtue of its high level of integration, the SC4905 PWM controller offers features and benefits that surpass what's available in competitive products," said George Georgalis, director of Semtech's networking and industrial power management products. "The SC4905 gives power supply and other equipment designers new opportunities to cut design time and component count, and therefore, cost and space while accelerating time to market." Nearly a dozen features thrust the SC4905 PWM controller into the market's leading-edge position. These features include programmable operation up to 1 MHz; integrated oscillator and voltage feed-forward compensation; and highly accurate, programmable, maximum duty cycle to avoid transformer saturation. Other key benefits include line voltage monitoring, external synchronization that accommodates ripple-reducing biphase operation with another controller, a 200 mV current limit threshold for high efficiency, and less than 100-µA of start-up current. Still other key characteristics of the SC4905 include an accessible reference voltage (4V in the SC4905A, 5V in the SC4905B), a Vdd undervoltage lockout (4.5V in the SC4905A, 12V in the SC4905B). The reference voltage, which supplies a typical current of 3 mA, is available for use in feedback and other circuitry. Key Features
Pricing and AvailabilityThe SC4905 high-performance, voltage-mode PWM controller comes in versions having typical turn-on voltages of 4.5V (SC4905A) and 12.5V (SC4905B). Production volumes of the SC4905A/B are available now through Semtech's authorized network of sales representatives and distributors. The product, which comes in a 10-pin MSOP and is rated for operation at junction temperatures from -40° to +105°C, sells for $0.99 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
