Semtech Sets Standard with Industry's First Secondary-Side, Single Stage, Low-Output Voltage, Switch Mode Power Supply Controller

Low output voltage, high-efficiency synchronous rectification and a multiphase link for isolated topologies head a long list of features and functions embodied in yet another industry-first power supply controller from Semtech

Camarillo, California - August 08, 2002

Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced the SC4910, an advanced secondary-side switch mode power supply controller with synchronous rectification. As the industry’s first single-stage secondary-side controller, the SC4910 leads the way as a key component in the design of low-output voltage, fast-response, high-efficiency power supplies.

As such, the SC4910 will find wide application in telecom, networking, and industrial power sources; servers, workstations, and other microprocessor-based equipment; wireless infrastructure products; and distributed power architectures, including those for supplying the latest generation ASICs, DSPs, and FPGAs.

"With the launch of the SC4910, a first-of-its kind, single-stage power conversion controller, Semtech has once again demonstrated its leadership in the design of switch-mode power controller products," said George Georgalis, director of telecom power management products. "The SC4910’s advanced features, high-performance, and high-efficiency are calculated to win over designers looking to cut space and cost without paying a performance penalty."

Unique in its role as a secondary side controller affording fast transient response, the SC4910 generates low voltages in a single stage, rather than the two stages required by competitive devices. That fact, and its synchronous rectification, account for the controller’s high efficiency. Moreover, adaptive control and a programmable secondary-side delay preclude cross conduction, further contributing to the controller’s high-efficiency operation.

What’s more, a multiphase link controller feeding two SC4910’s accommodates multi-face isolated converters to produce a second high-efficiency, low ripple input/output voltage with current sharing. The additional controller can be located near the load to minimize voltage drops and response time. Adding to its flexibility, the SC4910 operates in either voltage or current mode.

Yet even these key features only begin to tell the SC4910’s full story. In fact, the controller is rich with a wide range of features aimed at simplifying the designer’s job by packing the most functions into the least space and at the lowest cost. Among the SC4910’s bank of advanced features are a programmable switching frequency up to 1 MHz, programmable maximum duty cycle up to 90 percent, remote sense capability, soft start with active-low shut down, 0.75V precision reference, oscillator synchronization, current sharing and undervoltage lockout. In addition, the SC4910 is available in A and B versions having typical start-up threshold voltages of 9V and 4.5V, respectively.
