Semtech Expands Power Management Portfolio With Series of Small Footprint, Dual-Output Step-Down DC/DC Controllers

New devices offer low cost, precision, flexible, and efficient power regulation for high performance graphics processors, embedded processors, ASICs, DSPs, or memory

Camarillo, California - July 26, 2002

Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced the SC2610 Dual-Output DC/DC Power Controllers, which provide two regulated output voltages for devices such as graphics or other embedded applications; video memory subsystems; application specific integrated circuits; and digital signal processors. Packaged in a space-saving 10-lead MSOP, the SC2610 controllers combine a voltage-mode switcher and LDO (low dropout) regulator to efficiently accommodate a wide range of standard voltage and current requirements.

The switcher section provides efficient conversion at high current, while the LDO regulator section is more suited to lower current. This makes the SC2610 ideal for applications such as high-performance embedded graphics processors, where precise low voltage is needed for the core logic at relatively high current, while logic such as input/output drivers typically require higher voltage at lower currents. Both regulators are designed to drive external MOSFETs.

The SC2610 Series is available in three fixed switching frequency configurations--200kHz (SC2610C), 600kHz (SC2610A), and 1MHz (SC2610B)--offering designers wide cost-versus-efficiency flexibility when selecting discrete external components like capacitors and inductors.

The SC2610 interfaces with input voltages ranging from 3V to 15V, providing output voltages as low as 0.8V. The switcher supports "soft start" to control the flow of current for safer system startup. The SC2610 also provides superior line and load regulation--a measure of output voltage stability during operation.

"The SC2610 is the smallest, most efficient, cost-effective dual-output step-down DC converter on the market today," said Semtech’s Director of Desktop Power Management Products, Ken Boyden. "The introduction of this device strengthens our position as the premier supplier of low-voltage power supply solutions for graphics cards and other embedded processing applications."
